Uphaar verdict: Ansals to 85% instead of 55%

The Supreme Court has delivered its verdict today on the quantum of compensation to be awarded to the victims of the 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy. The Delhi High Court had ordered the theatre owners and the Delhi government to pay Rs 25 crore as compensation to the victims kin, but both parties had challenged this.

The court will decide on the petition of Ansals and Municipal Corporaton of Delhi that challenged the order of Delhi high court that ordered a compensation of approximately Rs 25 crore.

According to the verdict today, the Ansals will have to pay a greater share -- 85 per cent now, from the earlier 55 per cent. And of course, victims who were above 20 years then, will be paid a compensation of Rs 10 lakh instead of Rs 18 lakh.
