Why Anish Kapoor cancelled China show
June 15, 2011  17:03

Indian-origin artist Anish Kapoor has called off a planned exhibition in China over the ongoing detention of outspoken artist and human rights activist Ai Weiwei.

The British Council had asked Kapoor to plan a show at Beijing's National Museum of China as part of next year's "UK Now' festival.

But the artist's spokesman confirmed that he was not going to proceed in view of the detention of Weiwei.

Weiwei was detained in Beijing on April 3 as he tried to board a flight to Hong Kong, and remains under house arrest. He is under investigation for "economic crimes".

If you remember, Anish Kapoor had held shows in India, one in Delhi and one in Mumbai spanning December 2010 to January this year.
