17:56   J Dey murder: ACP says allegations absurd

Update on the murder of journalist J Dey.

A day after his abrupt transfer, a senior police officer, who could be questioned in connection with the murder of veteran journalist J Dey, said that he was
being falsely implicated in the case and the allegations against him were absurd.
"The allegations against me in the case (Dey's killing) are absurd and wrong. I have nothing to do with the case. I hope the investigating officials would be able to detect the case early and catch the culprits soon to clear the air,"
Assistant Police Commissioner Anil Mahabole told reporters at his residence in south Mumbai today.

He also denied media reports linking him with the underworld.
"Media is being fed by some people against me. They (some people) are the ones who are trying to falsely implicate me in Dey's case," he said.
When asked who they were, he replied, "I do not know. You find out."
He said he had a very cordial relation with Dey, whom he met two to three years ago.

Mahabole was yesterday abruptly shunted to Local Arms Control Room in suburban Naigaon from the in-charge post of Azad Maidan division in south Mumbai. "I have no idea about my transfer. I am on a leave for three days. After I resume duty, I will do whatever job I would be given. If I feel that injustice was meted out to me through the transfer, I would request my seniors to look into my transfer once again," he said.

16:46   Afghanistan won't collapse if US pulls out

The US today said that the planned withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan will not lead to the collapse of the war-torn nation.

"Afghanistan is far from stable and has a long journey ahead of it toward stability. But is Afghanistan likely to collapse to some Taliban onslaught, you know, as we move through a transition? We don't think so," the Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Vikram Singh said in his speech at the US Institute of Peace, a Washington-based think tank.

"Are we able and are we committed to staying engaged in Afghanistan and not sort of repeating the folly of the 1990s?  We're committed to that," Singh, an Indian American, said.

The passing away of MF Husain, living in enforced exile from this city that nurtured his art, is thus a footnote in a long and perhaps inexorable process of decline. Today, cosmopolitan Bombay has already all but become provincial Mumbai.

16:13   Dalai Lama thinks Oz PM Julia Gillard's male

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama was caught in a public gaffe today when he referred to Australia's first woman Prime Minister Julia Gillard as "him".

Questioned on whether he was disappointed that Julia Gillard, would not be meeting him during his Australia visit, the 75-year-old spiritual leader replied: "No."

"If your prime minister has some kind of spiritual interest then of course my meeting would be useful," he said. "Otherwise, I have nothing to ask him (Gillard).

"Also, you see, there's no point to seek advice from him (Gillard)," the Dalai Lama, who is on an 11-day tour of Australia to give a series of lectures on Tibetan Buddhism and his life, was quoted as saying by Australian Associated Press.

The Dalai Lama, who used "him" to refer Gillard, 49, was later corrected by one of his aides who quickly said "Her."

Realising his mistake, the Buddhist monk laughed and said, "Oh, from her."

15:32   PC: Jaya has utter contempt for judiciary

This is P Chidambaram's response to J Jayalalithaa's comment at the press conference today that he has cheated the nation because he actually lost the 2009 polls.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has the habit of  starting on the wrong foot. I have learned that she has made a statement questioning my election to the Lok Sabha in 2009.

She knows that her candidate, Shri Rajakannappan, has filed an election petition in the High Court, Madras, and that is pending since September, 2009. Her statement is therefore in gross contempt of court. She has always had utter contempt for court proceedings and hence her statement today is not at all surprising.

Besides, her candidate Shri Rajakannappan also contested the Assembly election in May, 2011 and lost from one of the segments falling within my parliamentary constituency. Perhaps, she would say that that election result was also fraudulent!

15:19   Mamata keeps promise, passes Singur Bill

The bill called the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Bill, 2011, revokes the lease agreement with Tata Motors for the 997 acres at Singur, citing issues of non-performance and failure to meet project goals.

This was one of the promises Mamata Banerjee had made, the day she was sworn in as chief minister of West Bengal.

"We are happy they have been released and the ship is now moving out," External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said.

He, however, parried a question about the role of Pakistani rights activist Ansar Burney in securing the release of the 22 crew members, saying, "Let us not get into a speculative analysis on who is behind it and who is provoking it". Somali pirates had released the crew members after ransom was paid to them, Burney had said yesterday.

13:46   CM on J Dey murder: Don't write off Mumbai police

While you digest JJ's press conference, an update on the killingof Mid Day journalist J Dey.

A day after mediapersons demanded a CBI probe into the killing of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey here, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today said the Mumbai police should not be "undermined" but given a fair chance to investigate the brutal murder.

"I am confident Mumbai police will get to the bottom (of the case). Give them time... There is no pointing in jumping the gun...and blaming someone or the other...Just give some time to Mumbai police to investigate," Chavan told reporters at a CII function here.

The CM said the journalists had demanded a CBI enquiry into the incident and asked for enactment of a law to protect them, to which I told them, "Lets not write off Mumbai police and not undermine their morale.. What about the common man who will they go to."

13:37   Jaya: Chidambaram has cheated the nation

Jayalalithaa also took on Home Minsiter P Chidambaram saying he has defrauded the nation. She said the case is in the court, and refused to elaborate saying it was a known fact that PC had in fact lost the 2009 polls to her candidate.

What happened during the 2009 Lok Sabha poll for the Sivaganga constituency was that Chidambaram, who was declared a loser in that election by the media monitoring the counting, was suddenly declared a winner by a narrow margin of 3,354 votes following protracted counting after round wise count announcements were stopped.

image
13:30

Asked why she did not meet Sonia Gandhi, Jaya says it's not appropriate for me to call on Congress President Sonia Gandhi as her party still has an alliance with the DMK.

image
13:27
Jaya says the memorandum to the PM also says she wants a MLA-led delegation to Sri Lanka to see the condition of Tamils there.
image
13:23
The only and possibly anti-government quip she's made so far is saying that "people have a right to protest" with reference to the Lokpal Bill.
image
13:19

Jaya: DMK paying the price for its mistakes. Says all that the DMK did was amass wealth.

Now explains why she choose Fort St George as her office and not the new secretariat (which was Karunanidhi's dream project) by alluding to how a file had to be sent from one building to another, hampering work.

image
13:10   Jaya: Offering support to Cong doesn't arise

Speaking on the DMK-Congress alliance at the Centre, Jaya finally says that the question of the AIADMK offering support to the Congress "simply does not arise". She says the AIADMK cannot approach the Congress on the issue, it has to work the other way round.

Finally, slams the DMK government for running a state overrun by fear. Compares former TN CM Karunanidhi to Hitler.

image
13:07

In her memorandum to the PM, Jaya has asked for a special package for Tamil fishermen and equal rights for Sri Lankan Tamils.

image
13:04

Jaya, so far, has refused to answer any question on the DMK.

Incidentally, why is it that when heads of state or politicians meet, they always sit in the most uncomfortable chairs (straight-backed, narrow). And positioned to ensure a crick in the neck.

image
13:00

Remember, this Jayalalithaa's first visit to Delhi after her electoral win and in a departure from the norm, UPA chief Sonia Gandhi had called her up to congratulate her on her win.

Jaya, as you are probably aware, is an erudite speaker, always calm and gets her views across clearly, without ever raising her voice.

image
12:56
Jaya says it's important that Centre-State relationship is good and said that the PM has promised assistance for TN.
image
12:54   Jaya: Have full faith in the judiciary in 2G scam

Jaya says she has full faith in the judiciary regarding the 2G scam. But reiterates her demand for Union Textiles minister and former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran's resignation.

Says the Lokpal draft has been sent to her for her views. Doesn't answer whether the party will fill out the questionnaire.

Remember, so far, UP CM Mayawati and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar have refused to do so.

image
12:50   Jaya's press conference in Delhi begins

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's meeting with the PM  is done and her press meet begins.

Says her meeting with the PM was very pleasant.

Says she cannot answer whether the DMK is worried or otherwise at her presence in Delhi.

12:38   Racist Oz broadcaster fined for Dick-shit remark

A controversial New Zealand Broadcaster has been slapped with a fine of 2444 dollars for airing a racist joke on Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshitlast October during a TV show.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority also criticised former Breakfast host Paul Henry who while hosting a TV show used derogatory remarks against the Delhi Chief Minister in the course of a discussion on the CommonwealthGames, poking fun at her name.

The BSA said Henry's statements were offensive to both Dikshit and to all Indian people.  "We consider that Henry's repeated ridicule of Dikshit's name amounted to a sustained and deliberate attack against the Chief Minister personally.

"His subsequent comment, which associated the words 'dick shit' with people of Indian descent was not only derogatory but entirely dissonant with common decency and a clear breach of the discrimination and denigration standard,"BSA decision said.

It was also noted that Henry's manner, which included sneering and uncontrollable laughter during the segment, worsened his offence.

Citigroup today said it has reduced its stake in mortgage lender HDFC to 9.9 per cent from 11.4 per cent, a deal the US bank said would give it apre-tax profit of about USD 160 million.

Citigroup sold 1.5 per cent holding in HDFC. The move by Citi was aimed at bringing down its holding in HDFC to below 10 per cent in order to avoid setting aside additional capital under the new international Basel-III agreement on bank capital requirements.

Citi held a 11.38 per cent stake in HDFC through Citigroup Strategic Holdings Mauritius and Citigroup Holdings Mauritius as of March 31, 2011.

Reacting to the news, shares of HDFC fell by 2.20 per cent to touch an early low of Rs 643 on the BSE.

11:47   Jaya in Delhi watched closely by Cong, DMK

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who arrived in New Delhi yesterday will be meeting PM Manmohan Singh any moment now, ahead of a press meet at 1 pm.

The two-day visit is politically significant as it's her first visit to the capital post poll victory.

Manish Tiwari, Congress spokesperson, played down the visit saying she was a newly elected chief minister and it was part of procedure to meet the PM. Tiwari also reiterated his stand that the Congress and the DMK remained partners.

Yesterday, BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad and CPI leader D Raja made courtesy calls on her soon after she arrived in the Capital.

"The company's IPO, were it to happen by next spring, would probably be triggered by a section of the 1934 Securities and Exchange Act known as 'the 500 rule', "which mandates that once a private company has more than 500 investors, it must begin releasing quarterly financial information to the Securities and Exchange Commission, just as public companies do, the report said.
