Rath yatra crowds knock lad under giant wheels

A six-year-old boy died after he was crushed under the wheels of the Lord Jagannath chariot at Purunapani in Sundargarh district, 70 km from Rourkela, the police said today.

Sushanta Mohapatra, who was witnessing the Ratha Yatra celebration yesterday at Purunapani, fell on the ground when he was knocked by the chariot pulling crowd and came under the wheels of the chariot, the police said.

He was immediately rushed to Hatibari health centre and subsequently shifted to Rourkela Government Hospital. However, the boy succumbed to his injuries last night, they added.
