16:13   No fireworks on Tibetan new year, gags China

China might have celebrated the onset of its new year with a massive display of fireworks in the mainland but it has enforced a strict ban on pyrotechnics for Tibetan capital Lhasa during the upcoming Tibetan New Year.

The municipal government of Lhasa has promulgated a ban of fireworks during the Tibetan New Year which falls on March 5.

According to a decree of the municipal government, production, storage, sales and setting-off of fireworks in all urban areas in Lhasa are restricted, while an absolute ban is enforced in the old town areas near schools, hospitals and ancient buildings, and sites of public gathering, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The city decided to restrict fireworks through a government decree, the first ever in Lhasa, to prevent pollution, protect state and private property and maintain social order, the secretariat of the municipal government said.

Violators will be fined from 50 to 2,000 yuan in accordance with situation or face other punishment, the announcement said.

Early this month, China celebrated its new year of rabbit with a colourful display of fireworks all over the mainland for a fortnight.

15:30   Earth's value 3,000 trillion pounds!

Earth is worth 3,000 trillion pounds, according to an astrophysicist who claims to have created a formula to calculate the value of a planet.

In fact, the astrophysicist, Greg Laughlin, came up with the figure by calculating the sum of the planet's age, size, temperature, mass and other vital statistics -- and Earth came out as the most expensive.

"The formula makes you realise just how precious Earth is and I hope it will help us as a society safeguard what we have," the 'Daily Mail' quoted him as saying.

Mars was only valued at 10,000 pounds, while Venus is said to be worth less than a penny.

There are about 1,235 other planets in the universe, most of which weren't given a high price tag because of their inhospitable climates.

Professor Laughlin from the University of California invented the equation, which he used to evaluate the discoveries made by US space agency NASA's 600 million pounds Kepler spacecraft.

The planet-hunting spacecraft went into orbit two years ago and a year later Laughlin decided to create price tags for the terrestrial planets that Keplar was to discover.

At the time, the exoplanet Gilese 581 c was considered the most Earth-like world known to scientists, but the equation only valued it at 100 pounds, while KOI 326.01 is said to be worth 150,000 pounds.

11:30   Aus searching for Gaddafi's assets Down Under

Australian government is trying to track down on any possible assets of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, his family or cronies in the country, Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said today.

Foreign Minister Rudd said the government was working on every resource to trace down any assets belonging to Gaddafi.

"I'm not advised as to whether there are such assets or not, but such an examination is now under way," Rudd was quoted as saying by the Australian news agency AAP.

"The critical thing is to cause the regime to know that, whether it's in Australia or any other part of the world, their assets are now being frozen, and this hopefully brings a further item of focus to the mind of this entirely despicable regime," Rudd he said.

The Sun-Herald newspaper had reported that Gaddafi's sons, Seif al-Islam and Saadi Kadhafi, may have salted away millions of dollars in oil money in Australian investments during a series of visits here over the past nine years.

Australia on Sunday announced sanctions against Libya, placing a travel ban and an arms embargo on Gaddafi and his close supporters, and banning the leader and his entourage from engaging in financial transactions with Australians.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Monday welcomed the United Nation's decision to refer the ongoing violence to the International Criminal Court.

11:13   Pak won't be able to afford mid-term polls: Gilani
Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has expressed his resolve to continue his party's reconciliation policy to make the country's parliament and democratic institutions stronger.

Gilani also said that the country would not be able to afford mid-term or general elections in the prevailing circumstances, and stressed that the Pakistan Peoples Party would continue to play its role effectively whether it was in the government or in the opposition.

"Politics is not a matter of one day, but a day to day affair, and we will continue to adhere to the issue-oriented politics," the Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying.

"If the PPP loses majority in Punjab, it would prefer to sit on opposition benches instead of resorting to horse trading to gain majority. We are totally against change of heart or horse trading," he added.

The Prime Minister further said that the PPP had accepted the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz agenda with all sincerity, and had called upon the PML-N to de-link it from the Punjab government.

"Punjab issue should not be bracketed with vital national policy which encompass all issues, including those mentioned in the N-League agenda," Gilani said.
