Kerala's plea to lower Mullaperiyar dam water level quashed

The Supreme Court today dismissed Kerala's plea to lower the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam to 120 feet from the current 136 feet, reports NDTV. "Both Kerala and Tamil Nadu are adding fuel to fire on the Mullaperiyar Dam issue," the apex court said. "The safety of people is paramount and it can't be compromised," the court added.

This court, already hearing the dispute, had constituted an Empowered Committee to examine the safety of the dam and Kerala's request for constructing a new dam in lieu of Mullaperiyar.
