J-K encounter on, woman killed

Mukhtar Ahmed reporting from Srinagar says that a woman was killed in north Kashmir by security forces late last night. A senior police officer said that the anti-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles had surrounded a meadow in the upper reaches of Handwara in north Kashmir's Kupwara district yesterday during which hiding militants fired at the search parties.

"In the resulting encounter, a local woman identified as Saleema and her husband Abdul Rashid Paswal were injured. They were evacuated to hospital where Saleema succumbed to her injuries', the officer said. The gunfight in the area is sill on.
