The company today proposed an annual pay package of up to Rs 70 crore for its chief Sunil Mittal, besides other benefits, while seeking its shareholders' nod for his remuneration.
The proposed package would be more than double his last fiscal remuneration of Rs 27.5 crore, which is nearly three-fourth or about 76 per cent of the combined pay package of the company's all directors in fiscal ended March 31, 2011.
Mittal's remuneration rose by about Rs 4 crore or 17 per cent from his 2009-2010 fiscal's package of Rs 23.5 crore.

17:10   Mayawati directs party MPs to stall Parliament

Our Delhi correspondent writes in to say that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has directed the BSP MPs to block parliament till the UPA2 tables the Land Acquisition Bill, by the end of the monsoon session. Mayawati's directions were carried out by the BSP leader in Rajya Sabha.

In the business advisory committee meeting, the BSP conveyed to UPA2 that the party wants Parliament to run, the announcement should be made in both houses.

India will take over the monthly presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today after a gap of 19 years. India's focus would be on crucial issues, including terrorism in its neighbourhood. The one-month presidency is expected to help India send out a message that it has the credentials and political maturity to be a permanent member of the UNSC.

16:42   Moily on K'taka: BJP should ask for fresh polls

Corporate Affairs Minister M Veerappa Moily said today that fresh polls were needed in Karnataka following the resignation of chief minister B S Yeddyurappa.  

"The right course of action is, if there is any grace left with BJP, they will have to step down and ask for a fresh elections," Moily said before Parliament began session today.

"Governance is already a casualty under B S Yeddyurappa and BJP. Whether Yeddyurappa continues or somebody else continues, governance is already dead and gone," he added.  

Yeddyurappa had resigned on Sunday as Chief Minister after the report by state Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde named him in the illegal mining scam.

Targeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Anna Hazare today termed as "unfortunate" his justification for keeping his post out of the purview of the
proposed Lokpal and wondered whether the "honest" person was
telling lies.
Hazare questioned the government's intentions on the Lokpal Bill and said he was ready to go to jail if he was not allowed to  demanding a strong anti-corruption law. He made it clear that he was not insisting on undertaking the fast at Jantar Mantar because for him the issue is more important than the venue.

16:20   Kalmadi in AIIMS, says: Can't I have a check-up?

Sacked CWG OC chief Suresh Kalmadi, who is currently lodged in Tihar jail, was today admitted to AIIMS for a fresh medical check-up.

"Kalmadi has been admitted and he is in room number 1001. Few formalities, as per the norms for MPs, were done in the morning before admitting him," an AIIMS doctor said.  The 67-year-old MP from Pune, who arrived at around 10 am today, was admitted to the cardio neuro-sciences department of the hospital in a private ward. 

When asked why was he being admitted, Kalmadi retorted, "Ask the doctors. Can't I have a checkup?"

Banking giant HSBC has said it will cut 25,000 jobs by 2013 and exit operations in 20 countries as it looks to save billions of dollars. The announcement came as the bank reported pre-tax profits for the first six months of the year of $11.5bn, up 3% on the $11.1bn the bank made a year earlier, reports bbc.co.uk.

15:06   Scooter bomb kills four in Imphal
At least four persons including a student were killed and a few others injured when a powerful bomb exploded near an educational institution in Imphal West
district of Manipur this afternoon.
Suspected militants tied the bomb to a two wheeler and it exploded at around 2 pm killing four persons on the spot, official sources said.
The injured were admitted to hospital, they said, adding police have rushed to the spot. No group has claimed responsibility so far.

Here's what a Red Corner notice means: A Red-corner notice is an arrest warrant circulated by Interpol on behalf of the government of a particular country. It is a request from one country to another to arrest and deport the wanted individual.

Chhota Rajan is believed to be in South East Asia -- either in Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok.

In the Maharashtra Assembly today, Home Minister RR Patil said the government will ask the CBI to inform Interpol to put up a Red Corner notice against gangster Chhota Rajan in the J Dey murder case.

Mumbai Police commissioner Arup Patnaik had claimed underworld gangster Chhota Rajan ordered the veteran journalist's murder and the cops had enough evidence. The murder was a well co-ordinated and synchronised operation with help from the underworld. Dey, who worked with Mid Day, was shot dead on June 11.

Three months ago, on May 1, shortly after eleven o'clock at night, two MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters lifted off from Jalalabad Air Field, in eastern Afghanistan, and embarked on a covert mission into Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden.

Inside the aircraft were 23 Navy SEALs from Team Six, which is officially known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group. A Pakistani-American translator, whom I will call Ahmed, and a dog named Cairo, a Belgian Malinois, were also aboard.

13:27   US delayed Osama op fearing Pak fallout

Two months after Osama bin Laden was killed, the United States revealed today that the operation (despite being  '60 percent sure' about his presence in the Abbottabad compound) had been delayed. The fears were that a move could affect its relationship with Pakistan.  

"There has never been a dispute on targeting al Qaeda. The ISI had translated a communication of (Abu Ahmed) al Kuwaiti (Bin Laden's courier) from Arabic for the CIA which ultimately led to the compound of the al Qaeda chief," a source said.

13:05   Omar promises Sopore killing inquiry in 'days'
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said the inquiry into the alleged custodial killing of a Sopore youth will be completed "in days" but the government will not act in haste as that can compromise with the case.
Nazim Rashid, a 28-year-old youth, died in police custody yesterday at Sopore in Baramulla district, a day after being detained in connection with the killing of a civilian by militants earlier in the week.

A case of negligence has been registered against the captain and crew of MV Pavit at the Yellow Gate police station. In a repeat of the M V Wisdom episode, Pavit, a much-smaller cargo vessel, ran aground near the Juhu beach in Mumbai on Sunday. The Panama-flagged vessel M V Pavit, which has a capacity to hold 1,000 tonnes of cargo (as against M V Wisdom's 10,000 tonnes) ran aground near Seven Bungalows early on Sunday morning and was suspected to have drifted on from the Persian Gulf.

Italian authorities have found 25 dead bodies in a boat that was carrying refugees. The boat was discovered off the coast of the southern island of Lampedusa, reports cnn.com. In an embarrassment to the Congress, 10 party MPs from Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh, who have tendered their resignation on the separate
statehood issue, today stayed away from Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session. 

The MPs, including senior party leader K Keshav Rao, decided not to attend the session and were closeted at his residence. Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar said the Telangana Congress MPs who have resigned their posts will not attend the session. "We want a separate Telangana state. That is our only
demand. So, we are not attending Parliament," he said.

"It is our sincere desire that this session should run smoothly and Parliament should discuss all issues of national importance and the government is quite prepared for any subject which the Opposition would like to be taken up," Singh told reporters outside Parliament.

11:23   Associate, not Taliban killed Karzai's brother

In Afghanistan, news is that President Hamid Karzai's half-brother was killed by an associate over a personal issue, and was not assassinated by the Taliban.

The Taliban had earlier claimed responsibility for the death of Ahmed Wali Karzai on July 12.  

But the official has said close review of the killing led authorities to conclude the Taliban was not behind Ahmed's assassination. The gunman was identified as Sardar Mohammad, a trusted friend of the family and security commander.

Cutting Pakistan no slack, the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Admiral Mike Mullen alleged today that there were still several strongholds of the Al Qaeda network inside Pakistan.

Addressing the troops during a third day of his visit to Afghanistan, Mullen said there are still safe heavens of terrorists which included Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Haqqani network, in Pakistan's tribal region.Mullen claimed that US commandos believed that security affairs have improved.

Neighbourhood news:

China said today that Islamic extremists were behind an attack on the eve of the Muslim fasting month in the restive western region of Xinjiang that left 20 people dead. The attack in Kashgar city on Sunday afternoon was the latest violence to shake the region where Muslim Uighurs have long resented the presence of Han Chinese and religious and political controls imposed by Beijing. It came less than 24 hours after two small blasts hit the city, which is dominated by Uighurs.
