The Milind Soman Chat

Milind Soman When Rediff On The NeT's editorial staff left some 30 minutes to midnight, Milind Soman was still around chatting in the Small, Smoke Filled Cafe after he had done duty on the Rediff Chat.

"Great fun," he told us, "I'll be back-- that is if I ever leave."

The supermodel, widely acclaimed to be the sexiest man in the country, made himself at home as soon as he arrived at the Rediff office. Munching chicken sandwiches, he gup-shupped about his ads, his career, never at a loss for words. Only once was he struck speechless. "You are cute," one lady contributor declared. "Cute?" puzzled Milind after a long pause, "... I thought I was sexy."

It was great fun. Check that transcript now!

B Datta (Thu Oct 10 20:06:05 1996 IST):

I hear you were a national swimming champion once, so how did you decide to become a model? Was it by chance? Was it by design?

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:06:24 1996 IST):

What's new with you, Milind??

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:07:43 1996 IST):

Akansha Mathur (Thu Oct 10 20:08:27 1996 IST):

Milind, how far do you see yourself going? Will it always be working in the glamour world?

Ranen Bhattacharya (Thu Oct 10 20:08:28 1996 IST):

What kind of world is the world of modelling? Sometime back, I saw you on television and you seemed a smart guy. How do you fit in with the world of mannequins? They seem so articial. How do you make conversation with them?

MILIND SOMAN (Thu Oct 10 20:09:19 1996 IST):

Akansha: All the campaigns I have worked on so far have been great fun for me . I always work for people I enjoy working with, and who enjoy working with me. Ssome of my fav campaigns have been, Power shoes where I was working out and the whole film is about me working out. Philips music system, where I was working with this girl who was 5 years old and was really cute. Cinthol was the film in which I looked the best and I got a lot of praise for that film for my body*wicked laugh* the ad for which I got a lot of critical acclaim was Tuff shoes.

B Datta (Thu Oct 10 20:09:22 1996 IST):

How much of your career came about by your hard work? is it very difficult to make headway? I am sure having a good body and a pleasant face is not enough. There must be something more to it.

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:09:48 1996 IST):

....

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:09:54 1996 IST):

Since I made you so big,you seem to be headed for a permanent TV fix.....is that what you plan?

Ranen Bhattacharya (Thu Oct 10 20:09:58 1996 IST):

Are you a millionaire yet?

Akansha Mathur (Thu Oct 10 20:10:28 1996 IST):

What are the kind of people you hang out with.. are they the modelling fraternity or do you have the not-so-famous types also?

aphrodite (Thu Oct 10 20:11:44 1996 IST):

why did you get kicked out of daayara?

aphrodite (Thu Oct 10 20:12:03 1996 IST):

and oh, hi.

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:12:42 1996 IST):

Hey Milind, what's up? wanna talk or noooo?

B Datta (Thu Oct 10 20:13:12 1996 IST):

How do you relate to women swooning all over you? Do you then begin to have illusions about yourself? Some kind of narcisstic self trip?

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:13:37 1996 IST):

.....

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:14:16 1996 IST):

Are you going to be trying a new line....or what? Please answer something.......

Akansha Mathur (Thu Oct 10 20:14:29 1996 IST):

How do you manage to stay so trim Milind?

MILIND SOMAN (Thu Oct 10 20:15:07 1996 IST):

Ramen: Modeling is a great career its not a very long career in terms of time it lasts around ten years .max..but you have alot of every thing fame, glamour, money, people love you for your body and you make a lot of contacts and you can explore a lot of different areas, u meet a lot of people of various interests which may be the same as yours who want to work with you, because they think you are interesting. We have a lot of fun .....us mannequins. Basically models are normal people, they are just in an profession in which their faces and bodies are more important than anything else, there are a lot of smart guys and girls in modelling but they do not get a lot of exposure on television. So you don't really know how smart they are. All models are created by the media and that's why they appear are artifical don't judge them too harshly.

Balwant Chavan (Thu Oct 10 20:15:37 1996 IST):

Milind, Hi! Why do cultivate this ever so cool look? Like Mr Beatty? Is there a role model you are trying to emulate?

Akansha (Thu Oct 10 20:16:00 1996 IST):

Hi Milind!!!

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:16:54 1996 IST):

Milind... look's like you're being bombarded with Qs........ are you typing yourself? Why don't you have one fo the rediff people type for you?? That way..you can answer a lot more questions...faster..too.....

MILIND SOMAN (Thu Oct 10 20:18:17 1996 IST):

Hi clion. I like your name. Where do u get a name like that?

B Datta: I love it. Its one of the perks of the business. Well narcissm is sometjing you have to develop to be good in the business, even though it does not come naturally .

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:18:33 1996 IST):

.!. :-((((( Hey, how long are we gonna wait for something to happen? U a hunk or horse?

aphrodite (Thu Oct 10 20:18:42 1996 IST):

hello? does one get one's questions answered?

MILIND SOMAN (Thu Oct 10 20:20:20 1996 IST):

Balwant Chawan: Well I hope you like Mr Beatty. Personally I feel he is one of the sexiest men on the face of the earth. I don't conciously try and ber like somebody else. I'm still trying just a s everyone else to find out what I'm really like.

Akansha (Thu Oct 10 20:20:21 1996 IST):

How much do you relate to the character you played in the serial A Mouthful of Sky ??

B Datta (Thu Oct 10 20:20:56 1996 IST):

Milind, I am surprised to discover that you are a a devotee of Narcissus. That can get very dangerous, especially when you grow old. Have you thought about that?

Akansha Mathur (Thu Oct 10 20:21:18 1996 IST):

What do you do with the pots of money that you earn. DO you have a secretary to keep track of your schedules etc.?

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:21:33 1996 IST):

Ehy Milind.. if you were not modeling, what would your career choice be????

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:22:27 1996 IST):

Ehy Milind.. if you were not modeling, what would your career choice be????

MILIND SOMAN (Thu Oct 10 20:22:32 1996 IST):

Aphrodite: Hindi films are a world quite different from any other. Its very difficult to say why certain projects do not work out, I must say that it was unfortunate that I could not work in Dayaara. It was a great project and a fantastic concept. But just bad luck for me I guess.

Balwant Chavan (Thu Oct 10 20:22:51 1996 IST):

There is something Beattyish about you these days. How long do you have in the business? Five years, six years. You know something. Women mannequins go on to have other lives, male hunks-- they just wither and be part of the landscape. How do you plan to avoid that?

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:23:01 1996 IST):

Are you in this line because you earn such alot or do you really think you are an incarnation of Adonis?

aphrodite (Thu Oct 10 20:23:33 1996 IST):

are you naturally diplomatic?

Akansha (Thu Oct 10 20:23:50 1996 IST):

How much do you relate to the character you played in the serial A Mouthful of Sky ??

Akansha Mathur (Thu Oct 10 20:23:55 1996 IST):

What response do you get from people when you go abroad for shows?

B Datta (Thu Oct 10 20:24:30 1996 IST):

I am also rather surprised-- if you don't mind me saying so -- by you choice of mate.

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:24:51 1996 IST):

Milind..my name.. well that's just a handle and it's a long story....

MILIND SOMAN (Thu Oct 10 20:25:52 1996 IST):

Clion: Ii would be a scuba diver

B Datta: I realise the dangers of narcissm but I try and be a s objective as possible regarding my physicality, and after I stop modelling and quit the media I'd probably take up pottery which will cure me of any disease.

Ranen Bhattacharya (Thu Oct 10 20:25:58 1996 IST):

DXid the thought of playing a transverstite put you off? Or was it that two western ghats couldn't get along?

aphrodite (Thu Oct 10 20:26:13 1996 IST):

what's your idea of a beautiful woman? (please don't say Madhu!)

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:26:37 1996 IST):

While on the topic of Mouthful....... did you & the other players hit it off? or were there undercurrents, etc.....normally narcissus types have a thing about their own importance. How was it with you?

*Lois Lane* (Thu Oct 10 20:29:13 1996 IST):

HI MILAND and everyone else!

MILIND SOMAN (Thu Oct 10 20:29:21 1996 IST):

B Datta: Why?

Akansha: Ii was modelling in London and Paris where people didn't know me like they know me in India and they thought that I looked fantastic in places where the Indian media does have a reach and I'm as popular as I'm here the audience is realy good, the people are really friendly and they are dying for anything from India, especially if they arer settled abroad for a long period.

aphrodite (Thu Oct 10 20:29:35 1996 IST):

hello? how does one get your attention?

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:30:26 1996 IST):

Since you know that this is chaaar din ki chandni.... etc.,what other kind of work are you most likely to take up,when the time comes? Or will you end up modelling as an ancient?

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:30:36 1996 IST):

Milind....when you get a chance..could you please tell us about your beginings..life/school and stuff.

B Datta (Thu Oct 10 20:30:45 1996 IST):

Because Madhu appears rather how shall I put it, intellectually challenged. A case in point is her interview in Savvy. Of course she has a wonderful body!

Akansha Mathur (Thu Oct 10 20:30:59 1996 IST):

Do you have a very hectic social life?

*Lois Lane* (Thu Oct 10 20:31:28 1996 IST):

MILAND: tell me how it is to walk on the streets and to be stopped by most people asking for your autograph and girls swooning over u! ALso: what career would uhave looked at profesionally if u did not get into modelling, where ru based at right now, and what are your future plans

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:31:52 1996 IST):

Hi Lois! Fed up of Supermen? Here's one of our own... join the club!

Milind Soman MILIND SOMAN (Thu Oct 10 20:31:55 1996 IST):

Akask and Akanksha: The role in A Mouthful f Sky was esdpecially written for me , with my image and character in mind so it wasn't really difficult portraying the kinds of scenes that were written, I got the best compliment after the serial ended from some of the senio technicans working with me when they said they've never met anybody who was in my position who was so easy to work with.

WHATNAME (Thu Oct 10 20:31:59 1996 IST):

What will you be doing, say, 15 years from now?

Ranen Bhattacharya (Thu Oct 10 20:32:21 1996 IST):

What do you plan to do when the arc lights dim? I can't see you become a host on television.

*Lois Lane* (Thu Oct 10 20:33:23 1996 IST):

oops do forgive me for the wrong spelling of your name MILIND

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:33:58 1996 IST):

...

aphrodite (Thu Oct 10 20:34:21 1996 IST):

hey milind, i think i shall have to give up on u.

Akansha Mathur (Thu Oct 10 20:34:30 1996 IST):

I read in the chat intro that you didn't have a car, do you have one now?

AKASH BHANDARI (Thu Oct 10 20:34:45 1996 IST):

I heard that you are a real Mamma's boy... is that true? I guess she must have had some sort of influence ....????

B Datta (Thu Oct 10 20:35:06 1996 IST):

Ranenbabu, I think he could become a nice television journalist. Very charismatic fellow.

Ranen Bhattacharya (Thu Oct 10 20:35:53 1996 IST):

Mr Datta, we have just met, and you are already trying your Bengali number with me.

aphrodite (Thu Oct 10 20:36:19 1996 IST):

mr soman? are u listening?

clion (Thu Oct 10 20:37:30 1996 IST):

WHat is the ideal role for you on screen or film ? And how would you tailor that?

Shikha (Thu Oct 10 20:37:41 1996 IST):

Hi Milind!! What do you think of the quality of advertising in India??
