The Farah Khan Chat

Farah Khan Farah Khan was easygoing, friendly and free to chat with. And the few questions that fell on uneasy ground, she answered with both candour and politeness.

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 7:57 IST)
Hi everyone, I didn't think anybody would log in but nice to know that you have :-)*grin*

The next Maniratnam (Wed Jul 29 1998 7:59 IST)
Ms. Khan, about 5 years ago, when we were in the middle of the Govinda-Karishma wave of raunchiness and vulgarity in dance, there were these obscure 'Superhit Muqabla' awards or something. When you were given the 'Best Choreographer' award for Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, I remember your acceptance speech. You firmly stated that one could create beautiful dances without resorting to mindless 'jhatkas' and vulgarity. (which obviously was in reference to Dhawan-Govinda-Karishma & Co.) I would like to congratulate you for coming out so strongly against vulgarity in Hindi films. Do you remember the instance I'm talking about? I think it was in 1993-4....

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:2 IST)
The next ManiRatnam: Thanks for remembering and you've got a great memory. That was the Sumo Award that I got and it happened only once *thank god*:-)

And I wanna know why you call yourself the next Mani Ratnam??

sherry (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:1 IST)
What do you think of Shiamak Davar? *grin*

The next Maniratnam (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:1 IST)
The day I direct my movie, I wont need a choreographer! No song and dance for me....

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:4 IST)
SHERRY I don't think of him. Period. *Big grin*:-)

The next Maniratnam" and so will I when I make my films (I won't have a choreographer)

Deepak (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:2 IST)
Hi Farah, I am Deepak from London, when did u start ur first dancing lessons ?

JOY (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:2 IST)
Farah: Where did you get your training from?

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:5 IST)
Joy/Deepak: I have no formal training in dance but I have been getting my dancing lessons from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and the other music greats. I have got my training in choregraphy by watching Vijay Anand films.

sherry (Wed Jul 29 1998 7:58 IST)
Is Sajid Khan really yr bro??? *disbelief*

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:8 IST)
Sherry: Yes Sajid Khan is really my bro, even I disbelieved it when he was born but !!!!...............

Saint: Why are you called Saint?

SANJIT SINGH (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:8 IST)
Hey farah..the day i'll direct my first movie, you'll be my choreographer.. For sure!!!

JOY (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:7 IST)
Farah: I love the way you have directed Pehla Nasha and Dhol Bajne Laga. How much time did you spend on these two?

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:12 IST)
Thanks Sanjit I know I have a job in the future:-)

JOY: Pehla Nasha was shot over a period of a year because the cast changed completely and we had to reshoot the song and we were shooting it all over the place in Ooty and Kodaikanal and in Film City. But Dhol Bajne Laga was actually the easiest song I ever shot. We shot two mornings 7 in the morning to 10 and two evenings from 7 to ten.

JOY (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:12 IST)
I recently got a hold of Dil Se soundtrack. The music has not impressed me much.

Shabana (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:12 IST)
Farah: I don't understand one thing. Was your upbringing in a liberal family. I mean can u share some details about your parents and your bros and sis?

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:15 IST)
Joy hear the soundtrack of Dil Se twice more and you will love it, Rahman is like very good wine. Needs your ears to grow:-)

Shabana: Yeah my family is very liberal. I have only one brother and I have no sisters and my father died 12 years ago and my mom lives in Goa.

Moonface (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:14 IST)
Farah - what are your other films- awaiting release?

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:17 IST)
Moonface: Mani Ratnam's Dil Se, Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mansoor Khan's Josh... These are all with Shah Rukh and there is Sarfarosh with Aamir and Loveria with Saif and Karishma and some others which haven't started shooting yet.

Deepak (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:11 IST)
which is one heroine from the gone years (50's 60's) you would have liked to work with ? who has been the best dancer of all times so far ?

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:19 IST)
Deepak: I would have liked to work with Kishore Kumar actually but since I have to write about heroines *sigh* then I would have liked to choreograph Helen of course who is god's gift to dancing and maybe Waheeda Rahman -- she's beautiful. The best dancer working with me is the one who agrees to do whatever I say:-)

Moonface (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:19 IST)
Farah, It must have been fun directing Saif, Karishma - they I think are very good dancers. I wonder how good is Aamir! How do ya handle the star egos???

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:22 IST)
Moonface: Yeah, it was great fun directing these two, but especially because of Kundan Shah, the director who has also made Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na. Aamir is great to work with. He is very hard working very conscient (forget the word, we can't spell it). He may not be so much fun but....err...he works hard:-) The stars have no ego problems. I just make them stand on their head if they have any *bigtime grin*

Shabana (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:18 IST)
Farah: Do you believe in God. Or do you offer Namaz or fast during Ramzan? I am sure you won't be doing all these things like Lucky Ali who is very religious and told us in the chat room that he prays five times a day, isn't it folks?

Farah Khan Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:24 IST)
Shabana: I don't do Namaaz but I keep my roza's and that's it. And I do give a percentage of my earnings to charity. That's 'zakaat'. And I try to be nice to people and honest and hardworking and that's better than praying five times a day and not doing all this!

Moonface (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:23 IST)
Cool !! I like that Farah - you are one with fire in the belly *giggling*

dancer (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:23 IST)
Farah, I want to ask you one question....i like the way you choreograph you dances...But why do you criticise Saroj Khan?

Farah Khan (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:26 IST)
Moonface: The Fire is growing bigger I have to go on a diet now *giggling*

Dancer: Aww, I have never criticised Saroj Khan. She is a senior, VERY senior technician and I've been taught to be polite to my elders *big grin* >:-)

Das (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:26 IST)
Wonder why Mansoor Khan chose Shahrukh for his next film! He & Aamir made a hit jodi!!

SANJIT SINGH (Wed Jul 29 1998 8:9 IST)
farah..i am a big fan of mansoor khan...since u have worked with him, can u tell me anything about him? how he directs/thinks/acts....
