The Movie Chat

Amitabh Bachchan flunked the comeback test. And the Rediff community, along with experts Komal Nahata and Ramesh Sippy analysed the failure of his Mrityudaata. Of course, when the discussions sometimes digressed, the experts were not above giving some tidbits of inside information.

Mangal Pandey (Mon May 26 1997 19:51 IST)

Has he lost his touch, Mr Sippy? Why did he choose Mehul Kumar an untried commodity? What was it about Mehulbhai that impressed Mr B?

Vijay (Mon May 26 1997 19:52 IST)

Nahata and Sippy, why did Mrityudaata flop? I have not seen it. Hence this query.

Allahabadi (Mon May 26 1997 19:52 IST)

Shahenshah (Mon May 26 1997 20:3 IST)

Komalsaab, is Amitabh really an intelligent man? Or is that an image he has cultivated? I cannot believe an intelligent man could make such a lousy mistake.

Ali Ikram (Mon May 26 1997 20:6 IST)

Where the hell is everyone??? I guess the statements about the Indian film industry lacking punctuality are true.

Komal's fan (Mon May 26 1997 20:6 IST)

Hi, Komalji. I was a big fan of yours before I left India. Your views in Film Information are always so accurate. My folks also got Trade Guide, but your reviews were dead on. How do you know the industry so well?

Dinesh Raheja (Mon May 26 1997 20:6 IST)

Hi, this is Komal here... ready and waiting for your questions... go for it!

Heroine1 (Mon May 26 1997 20:6 IST)

Rameshji, Its high time that Amitabh retired gracefully instead of making a comeback. What do you say ?

Baadshah (Mon May 26 1997 20:7 IST)

Allahabadi: Phir to tum bahut paise kamate hoge. Par 30 saal pehle to main paida nahin hua tha. tum kaise bechte they ..

Allahabadi (Mon May 26 1997 20:7 IST)

-5.... where is he ?????

Heroine1 (Mon May 26 1997 20:8 IST)

IS MR SIPPY IN ?

FLOPSTAR (Mon May 26 1997 20:8 IST)

Komal... do you think that with this one flop, Amitabh's career is over? Or is there a chance for him yet?

Dracula (Mon May 26 1997 20:8 IST)

Komal, did Amitabh actually sit thru Mrityudaata before it was released?

Ali (Mon May 26 1997 20:8 IST)

Mr. Nahata, how do we regular filmgoers subscribe to your magazine. I can't find it anywhere on the newsstands. (Live in Canada.)

Heroine1 (Mon May 26 1997 20:9 IST)

Komalji, Its high time that Amitabh retired gracefully instead of making a comeback. What do you say?

Ramesh Sippy (Mon May 26 1997 20:10 IST)

Hi, this is Ramesh Sippy coming in to answer any questions you might have?

Ali (Mon May 26 1997 20:10 IST)

What are the hits so far in India this year, Komal. Please list them in terms of biggest to smallest.

Komal's (Mon May 26 1997 20:10 IST)

Shatrughan Sinha said on this Chat last fortnight that AB has been a has been. Would you agree?

FLOPSTAR (Mon May 26 1997 20:10 IST)

Komal... do you think that with this one flop, Amitabh's career is over or is there a chance for him yet?

Ramesh Sippy (Mon May 26 1997 20:10 IST)

Dracula: I think your guess is as good as mine.

Heroine1 (Mon May 26 1997 20:11 IST)

Rameshji / Komal ji Its high time that Amitabh retired gracefully instead of making a comeback. What do you say?

Doc (Mon May 26 1997 20:11 IST)

hi, everyone there

Vandita (Mon May 26 1997 20:11 IST)

Mr Sippy, How would you rate Amitabh in Mrityudaata?

Dracula (Mon May 26 1997 20:11 IST)

Mr Sippy, Does Amit stand a chance against Shah Rukh, Akshay, Aamir...

KOMAL NAHATA (Mon May 26 1997 20:11 IST)

Shahenshah>> Amitabh is a great actor, period! According to me, he has no business acumen to match the huge corporation he has opened. His statement that he is not to be blamed for Mrityudaata seems to be a white lie. Earlier, when he was just an actor, it was alright if he did not interfere in the making of his films. But now that he is a producer, too, to say he did not see the film or that he did not know what type of film is being made is nonsensical and cannot be pardoned by his various distributors. He definitely must have been involved (he calls it interference) in the making of the film and in all probability, does not want to take the responsibility now.

Komal's fan> I can only thank you for your kind words. As for the reviews, it is always a group effort. We see the films with the public, and take public opinion as final. One more thing, whenever I go to see a film, I am as excited as a small kid would be -- maybe that is why my reviews are more often than not correct.

Ali (Mon May 26 1997 20:12 IST)

Okay, Mr. Sippy. Where did Komal go? Anyway you tell me... which are the biggest hits of 1997 in order of biggest to smallest.

Vijay (Mon May 26 1997 20:12 IST)

Hullo, Mr Sippy. I loved your Sholay. Are you not making any films anymore?

FLOPSTAR (Mon May 26 1997 20:12 IST)

Komal... do you think that with this one flop, Amitabh's career is over or is there a chance for him yet?

Baadshah (Mon May 26 1997 20:12 IST)

Ramesh: What do u think is Amitabh's future on the Big Screen ?

Ramesh Sippy(Mon May 26 1997 20:13 IST)

Komal's : No I certainly would not. Because it would be too premature to write off a legend just because of one debacle. There might have been flops in every top star's career. They have not been written off in this manner. He tends to be more controversial because of the stature of his achievements .

Mangal (Mon May 26 1997 20:13 IST)

Rameshji, how did AB accept a film with Mehul Kumar? What was it about Mehulbhai that attracted him? I believe he turned down many directors before Mehulbhai.

KOMAL (Mon May 26 1997 20:14 IST)

Flopstar, Heroine 1>> To say that Amitabh is a has-been is unfair to him, especially because Mrityudaata has been his only film after his comeback. He IS a fine actor and, according to me, if he gets the right type of role, he can still make a mark. By "right type", I mean, not a senseless action film. Comedy also has been his forte. Besides, he can also come in a strong central character where action is one of the many things he should be doing - as opposed to the only thing, as in Mrityudaata.

Shahenshah (Mon May 26 1997 20:14 IST)

Do you believe Amitabh Bachchan is finished? Or is too early to write his celluloid obituary?

Allahabadi (Mon May 26 1997 20:14 IST)

sippy : i m waiting for another sholay. will i get one ?

Heroine1 (Mon May 26 1997 20:14 IST)

Mr. Sippy, Answer me honestly -- would you cast Big B in your movies in a lead role ?

Ali (Mon May 26 1997 20:14 IST)

Can someone confirm that KOYLA flopped in India. The film was the pits and deserves to rot in hell (though the songs were amazing.)

SMALL B (Mon May 26 1997 20:14 IST)

Mr Sippy, Why is Amitabh hyped so much? even his flops are big news, so much so that it's discussed everywhere...

Doc (Mon May 26 1997 20:14 IST)

hey, komal, who r u man to say anything about Amitabh

Ramesh Sippy (Mon May 26 1997 20:14 IST)

Badshah: Amitabh's future has slightly been disturbed but not yet written off. Some of the major films that he is working in right now may prove most of his detractors totally wrong, since nothing succeeds like success.

Vijay (Mon May 26 1997 20:15 IST)

They used to say AB was no 1 to 10. Is that still true? If not, who are the nos. 1 to 10?

Adivesh (Mon May 26 1997 20:15 IST)

I agree with you, Komal. I think Amitabh's main problem is that he does not understand the kind of adoration he inspires amongst the average Indian public. In many ways, the man is making a big mistake by abusing that adoration. He's uses the public without understanding the kind of effect he has on them -- and that's dangerous. It could boomerang painfully at any moment.

KOMAL (Mon May 26 1997 20:15 IST)

Ali>> Hey, I'm right here, where'd YOU go? To take your question - for 1997, it's Hero Number 1, Judaai, Judwaa, Ziddi and Yeshwant. In that order.

Dracula (Mon May 26 1997 20:15 IST)

Komal, has the industry suffered a big jolt because of failures of Mrityu..and Koyla? How are these failures going to affect the industry?

Ramesh Sippy (Mon May 26 1997 20:16 IST)

Heroine No 1: If I was a producer, which I'm not, and I had a script that suited his personality I would certainly consider it a pride to be able to cast Amitabh.
