NRIs float biz-n-law college for producing new-age execs

The first International College of Law and Business Administration, offering a five-year combined degree in law and business management, has been set up at Ajman, near Dubai, under the initiative of a few eminent Indians.

The college has been launched by a society headed by A M Ahmadi, former chief justice of India.

According to V K Beeran, senior advocate in the Supreme Court and secretary of the society, the college is being affiliated to the Mysore University and classes are to start by April 2000.

An agreement to set up the college has been signed by M K Kamaluddin, on behalf of the college's governing board, and Sheikh Ahmad Bin Humaid Bin Rashid Al-Nuaini, on behalf of Ajman's ruler Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuani.

Beeran said the visiting faculty of the college included V R Krishna Iyer, M M Punchi, both former Supreme Court judges, legal luminary Kapil Sibal, Prof Mathew George of Hong Kong, Prof Clemont John of Switzerland, Prof Sayed Fareed Ahmed of the USA, Prof M P Jain of Germany, Prof Al-Midani of France and Prof Stephen P Cohen of the USA.

Beeran said the plan is to club business and law, as a mere business management degree or a law degree is not sufficient in the emerging scenario. Every business venture demands widespread application of law, he said.

Legal experts who can appear before the domestic courts and before bodies like the International Commercial Arbitration and World Trade Organisation are in great demand, he said.

According to Beeran, initially the college would have limited seats and the admission would be open to Indians. Admission will be on the basis of an entrance test which will be held in all the states of UAE, Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

The process of obtaining affiliation from British and American Universities is in an advanced stage, he said.

The teaching would aim at promoting multi-disciplinary enquiry and practical appreciation of problems.

In each class, at least two teachers would be present to facilitate class discussion.

He said the college would publish its journal called the International Journal of Law and Business annually and the first issue is scheduled to be released in October 2001.
