Grasim CS₂ plant in Kerala ordered shut

The Kerala State Pollution Control Board has ordered the closure of Grasim Industries' carbon disulphide plant at Mavvor in Calicut district after ten villagers fainted following the emission of poisonous gases on January 20 and had to be hospitalised.

KSPCB officials said in Trivandrum that after an investigation, the board had asked the company to close the plant till adequate safety measures are taken.

They said senior KSPCB officials and environmental experts who inspected the area had found that sulphur dioxide and some other poisonous gases had leaked after a valve flap made of asbestos burst under high pressure.

The officials said that though the company had installed 'scrubber system' for the safety of the plant, it was yet to become operational.
