Prasar Bharati Ordinance to be repromulgated

Email this report to a friend

The Union Cabinet has decided to re-promulgate the Prasar Bharti (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Amendment Ordinance 1998 which is due to lapse on January 10.

The re-promulgation of ordinance replicates the pending bill and provides for succession mechanism of the earlier ordinance.

An official spokesperson said the national agenda of governance has favoured reviving the original Prasar Bharti Act, 1990 and the BJP-led coalition government was of the view that the Prasar Bharti Amendment Ordinance, 1997 had led to changes in several provisions of the original Act.

The present government has decided to restore the provisions by introducing a bill to this effect, which was approved by the Lok Sabha on July 31 last year. Since the bill could not be taken up for discussion in Rajya Sabha, the government promulgated an ordinance on August 28 last year.
