BSE Sensitive Index

Optimism over the Centre's initiative to promulgate an ordinance amending the provisions of the Patents Act to fulfill the country's obligation toward the World Trade Organisation and a general uptrend in the stock markets across the world led the Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange to record a rise of over 27 points today.

The BSE-30 Sensitive Index opened at 3129.58, witnessed a high and low of 3150.31 and 3103.62 respectively, before ending the day at 3149.06, a climb of 27.02 points from the previous close of 3122.04.

According to marketmen, foreign institutional investors bought shares of Telco, Satyam Computers, MTNL and sold Zee Telefilms. Domestic funds like the Unit Trust of India, LIC and GIC were active at the ITC counter.

''The sentiment remained bullish throughout the day,'' said a broker.

The east Asian markets ended higher, with the Hong Kong Hang Seng closing at 9891.06, up 81.89 or 0.83 per cent.

Back home, the BSE-100 index ended at 1402.06, a rise of 10.64 points from yesterday's 1391.42.

The BSE-200 and Dollex indices ended 2.81 and 0.95 points higher at 324.80 and 127.06 respectively.
