Pivotals decline after early gains; Nifty sheds 15 points, 884.25

Pivotals could not maintain their opening levels and recorded a moderate decline due to selling pressure from domestic institutions and foreign institutional investors today.

The S&P CNX Nifty index fell by 15.70 points to end at 884.25 from the previous close of 899.95. CNX Nifty Junior also eased by 16.95 points to end at 1519. S&P CNX Defty drifted by 12.10 points to close at 721.25. S&P CNX 500 and CNX Midcap 200 declined by 9.31 and 4.49 points to end at 609.06 and 546.17 respectively.

A total of 369 scrips advanced, 613 declined and 89 remained unchanged while 56 securities hit their price bands.

The total turnover of Rs 22.01 billion from trading in 73.4 million shares through 256,338 transactions and debentures traded were worth Rs 1.8 million.

Pentafour Software topped the turnover list with Rs 4.59 billion followed by ITC with Rs 3.65 billion, Satyam Rs 3.48 billion, Zee Telefilms Rs 1.46 billion and Telco Rs 1.36 billion.

Other shares that posted a high turnover were Castrol, SBI, Reliance, Tata Tea, HCL-HP, Tisco, Square D Software and Silverline.

The top gainers were P&G, NIIT, Glaxo, Bajaj Auto and TVS Suzuki. The losers were Tata Chemicals, Arvind Mills, Bank of India, L&T and ICICI. FIIs were sellers to the tune of Rs 2.04 million while financial institutions / mutual funds offloaded Rs 191.2 million.
