Delhi enjoyed its coolest May in 36 years, says IMD
June 01, 2023

Delhi recorded the coolest May in 36 years with excess rainfall bringing the average maximum temperature down to 36.8 degrees Celsius this time. "This is due to climate change. I have never seen this type of weather earlier. Now we are thinking will it rain in July and August," says Bhushan Narula, a local.

A severe thunderstorm reaching speed up to 80 km per hour and rain hit the national capital on Tuesday evening, affecting vehicular movement and leading to diversion of many flights.

"I have never seen this type of weather in May in my life, this is for the first time I am seeing this. This is happening due to Global warming, says Baljit Singh, a local.

"All these changes are taking place due to climatic change and global warming. People are cutting trees, pollution has increased, and all these changes are the result of this," Charulata, another local.

For the periods between January-May (during the eight years i.e. from 2016 to 2023), Delhi registers its best air quality during the current year (barring the periods of very low anthropogenic, industrial and commercial activities during the year 2020 due to Covid-19 lockdown), an official statement said on Wednesday.
