India reports highest 1-day surge of 28,637 cases

India on Sunday reported a record single-day spike of 28,637 COVID-19 cases, taking country's tally to 8,49,553,  according to health ministry data.

The death toll climbed to 22,674 with 551 people succumbing to the disease in 24 hours, the updated data at 8 am showed.

This was the ninth consecutive day that COVID-19 cases in the country increased by more than 22,000. 

According to Union health ministry data, the number of recoveries stands at 5,34,621 while there are 2,92,258 active cases. 

The total number of confirmed cases include foreigners.
