Former SL Army commander Fonseka promoted to Field Marshal
March 03, 2015

Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to promote former army commander Sarath Fonseka to the rank of Field Marshal. The ministry of defence is currently organising the relevant function, which is to be held on March 22.
Accordingly, Fonseka is to be the first Sri Lankan to be appointed to the rank, which is the highest rank in an army. Fonseka, who led the military to flatten the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, was later stripped of his titles under charges of harbouring army deserters during the 2010 presidential election.
