India's Ambassador to US S Jaishankar appointed new foreign secretary

India's envoy to the United States S Jaishankar has been named India's next foreign secretary.

Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will replace Sujatha Singh, who was due for retirement in August 2015. Her tenure has been curtailed with immediate effect.

TV reports say Sujatha Singh has put in her papers.
