July 24 would have been the 117th birthday of Amelia Earhart, who disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937 as she attempted to become the first woman to fly around the world. When the search was called off on July 18, it was, at the time, the greatest mass rescue effort ever undertaken for a lost plane.
