NDTV reports: Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that hours before the violence erupted on Saturday, he had phoned Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and warned him that "the situation is tense."

The minister also said that earlier alerts had been passed on as well, but said "I don't want to accuse the UP government of any failure."
