China sounds red alert as typhoon Fitow approaches coast

China today sounded a red alert as typhoon Fitow, the 23rd storm this year, approached the country's southeast coastal areas.        

The National Meteorological Centre said Fitow was 680 km east of Taipei and likely to make landfall in the coastal areas between central Zhejiang Province and northern Fujian Province between Sunday night and Monday morning.        

The red alert is the highest in the country's weather warning system.
