First train fare hike in a decade; up by 20 pc

Just in: Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal on Wednesday announced a hike in train fares. 

The new rates:

2nd class ordinary suburban- 2 paise per Km

2 class ordinary non suburban- 3 paise per Km

2nd class mail express train- 4 paise per Km

Sleeper class- 10 paise per Km

AC chair car- 10 paise per Km

AC 2 tier- 15 paise hiked earlier and additional 6 paise now

AC first class- 30 paise per km was hiked earlier and additional 10 paise now

The new fares will be effective from midnight of January 21, 2012. Meanwhile, the Railway Minister also clarified that the fares will not be hiked in Railway Budget.
