SC's new guidelines on who can use beacons
December 10, 2013
The Supreme Court brings out a new list of who is entitled to use a red beacon. The apex court says that non-flashing red beacons can be provided only to vehicles carrying people holding constitutional posts, or those who are dignitaries. That apart, ambulances, police or emergency services are also allowed to use read beacons.
The Supreme Court has cracked the whip on the use of red beacons by
VIPs earlier asking all state governments to review the security
given to VIPs.
The
apex court also said that the use of red beacons by authorities is
reminiscent of British Raj. The court stated that a regular review
should be done by a committee headed by a High Court judge.
