Guj: MLA guilty of murder not minister during riots

The Gujarat government reacts to the conviction of MLA Maya Kodnani in Naroda Patiya post-Godhra riots. Kodnani, a three-time MLA from Naroda area, who was considered to be close to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, was arrested in March 2009 when she was the minister and had to resign from the post.She has been convicted of murder and criminal conspiracy in the 2002 riots that left 97 dead.

However, the Gujarat government says that the MLA was not a minister at the time of the riots and the judgement would be studied carefully. The court will announce the quantum of punishment on August 31.
